ESTRIA

Estria Miyashiro is Hawaiian, Japanese, Okinawan, Irish and German. Born in Honolulu, he moved to the Bay Area during San Francisco’s 1980s “Golden Age of Graffiti.” He has been envisioning, planning and painting large-scale community mural projects and commissioned works for more than 30 years, and he is recognized around the world as an urban-art living legend. A pioneer in an arts movement that is more influential than the Renaissance, Estria is a valued historian and a community leader who helped awaken the social and political consciousness of graffiti writing. His murals celebrate servitude, transcendence, enlightenment, mihi (forgiveness), aloha and light, while his canvas work takes viewers on a journey where past, present and future are meshed in a nonlinear way. In 2010, he co-founded the Estria Foundation, which creates art in public spaces locally and globally.

EAST

Daesk&East-Mural

A native of Illiana (Illinois-Indiana) now residing in Denver, East graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine & Performing Arts in 1988. This classically trained scholarship recipient and teacher’s apprentice excelled in the arts of Intaglio printmaking and color theory. His love of technical lines and color spilled over into his passion for urban art, and East became a leading influence in the Illinois underground art scene and is a founder of Midwest graffiti styles. With more than 30 years’ experience, East continues to surge forward — through his consistency and perseverance, he has earned the title “Midwest Master.” Today, he owns and operates the Cypher Shop, Denver’s premium art supply boutique, and he continues to pursue his passion for letters and lettering styles.

SERVAL

Serval is a graffiti artist of American origin who grew up in Switzerland. He first got involved with graffiti and illustration in 1992 and has lived and painted in Europe, the United States, Australia and Southeast Asia. Serval’s work incorporates graceful letters with pure lines, deep and surprising colors, and themes or illustrations that highlight his illustrating skills. His work appeals to the street art and graffiti scenes, where he is widely recognized as a master of traditional graffiti; and to the comics audience, which appreciates his unique illustration skills and collaborations. In galleries, Serval explores his reflections on semiotics, the link between text and space, and the significance of gesture in painting. He seeks to bridge the academic with the popular, and the gallery world with urban craftsmanship.

SCRIBE

Scribe lives in Kansas City, Missouri, and is well-known for his animated public murals and gallery shows throughout the United States as well as in Canada and Mexico. His playful and often humorous work features a menagerie of animal characters that he has developed over many years. He intersperses personal iconography, biblical and fairytale references, animation and metaphor in works intended to serve as contemporary parables. Through accessible idiom and image, Scribe incorporates humor and play in the conveyance of serious messages regarding personal integrity, attainment of knowledge and adventure. He currently serves as art director for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, and he is producing a chapter book for kids ages 8-13 titled “The Scribble Squad,” which will be available in September.

Scape Martinez is an accomplished multidisciplinary artist who has been involved in graffiti art since the 1980s. Since then, he has pushed the boundaries of graffiti and street art, bringing this urban style into fine art, public art and education. Scape’s fine-art paintings combine elements of graffiti art and abstract expressionism to create large scale, rhythmic and expressive composition. Over the years, his passion for art has transcended walls and canvas to include public art, writing and art education. He frequently hosts graffiti workshops and lectures for teenagers, fellow artists and educators, and he has written four best-selling books on creating graffiti-style urban art, including “Graff: The Art and Technique of Graffiti,” “Graff 2: Next Level Graffiti Techniques,” “Graff: Color Workbook” and “Colormaster.”

A native of New Mexico, Kazilla lives and works in Little Haiti, Miami, where she has become one of the region’s top street artists, combining fine art and graffiti art to create an edgy, colorful clash of two different worlds. Often using various mediums, she continues to experiment with her distinctive, dynamic style. Organic themes infused with feminine figures, surreal landscapes, geometric patterns and vibrant colors create a daunting visual feast for all audiences. Kazilla also a regular globe trotter, leaving her mark and her art around the world. She paints live for musical acts and top brands, she displays her work in fine-art establishments across the country, and she finds time to also work as a performance artist, designer, muralist, photographer, producer, musician, philanthropist and consultant.

The work of Efren Rebugio has evolved through a variety of subject matter and themes. Recently, he has depicted animals. He finds interest in the similarities of animal behavior patterns and human personality traits. Efren’s work has been influenced by the process and results of personal growth. His pieces sometimes convey messages of ambition, positivity or hope. The style of his art consists of graffiti-influenced line work, mixed with realistic portrayals. His palette is inspired by a beach at sunset. Although the subject of a piece may project a sense of high energy, like a bird in flight or a roaring tiger, the colors transmit a calming sensation. Efren was technically trained as a graphic designer before working with paint. As he continues to evolve as an artist, he feels the 2-D world is just the beginning of his artistic journey.

DWAYNO INSANO

Insano
Dwayne Manuel, a painter and muralist, was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in July 1984 and grew up in the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community. After graduating from high school in 2002, he attended the Scottsdale Community College; earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2004; and ultimately earned his Masters of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Arizona in 2014. Dwayne has taught painting and drawing at the University of Arizona, as well as art classes at Salt River High School. Currently, he is a full-time artist based in Salt River, Arizona. He co-teaches mural arts to at-risk youth in a program called “Labor of Love,” creating murals on highly vandalized reservation properties. He also is a co-organizer of the art collective “Neoglyphix,” featuring 19 Native American graffiti artists from the Southwest, Midwest, California and Mexico.

BIAFRA INC.

Biafra Inc. Mural

Biafra Inc. (pronounced bahy-ah-fruh or bee-ah-fruh) is an artist residing in the Twin Cities. He took his name in part from Jello Biafra from the band Dead Kennedys, the first band he got into that had content in their lyrics. His work is a visual retelling of stories that are apart of his life; much of it takes a critical look at “white” culture. Biafra is a multifaceted artist who uses a variety of mediums, including spray paint, screen printing, stencils, stickers and posters. As his work spreads across North America, he continues to work tirelessly to get his imagery out to the public.

Rock Cyfi Martinez is a native to Tucson, Arizona. He is now lives and creates in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pulling from elements of his surroundings in nature and life, Martinez uses these themes throughout his work. He is influenced by his Mexican American heritage and native descent. A self-taught artist born in 1980 with more than 18 years of experience as a freelance muralist, Martinez has produced more than 300 murals throughout his career.

Wundr-Mural

Wundr is populating the space we live in with his playful, mischievous and always evolving illustrations. The characters he creates are not meant to represent any specific individual, but are stitched together from pieces of all of us. Wundr is currently producing artwork in multiple mediums, including murals, illustration, toys and fine art. Influenced by traditional graffiti, cartoons and comics, Wundr’s work provides a fresh take on designing characters that are constantly creeping into our known habitat.
